Led by Jane Broadwell
In meditation and in daily life, major forces in the mind can hinder our ability to be mindful, see clearly and act wisely. The reason that most people sit for years and never awaken is due to their failure to establish mindfulness as the first step in meditation, and inability to overcome the five hindrances.
The five hindrances are universal; we all experience them:
- Greed/lust/desire/ slipping into fantasy
- Lack of energy/dullness/apathy/laziness/boredom
- Unhelpful self-doubt and skepticism
These mental states are called "hindrances" because they bind us to ignorance and suffering. When the hindrances are absent, we feel naturally clear, happy and calm.
Usually, we struggle to get rid of hindrances in ways that seem to make sense but are actually counterproductive - then beat ourselves up when we can’t seem to shake them!
This workshop will focus on bringing mindfulness and counter-intuitive wisdom to our relationship with hindrances. There can be much less struggle in meditation and in life when our relationship to the hindrances is understood and radically altered.
This workshop is suitable for meditators of all levels.

Jane began her meditation practice at age 19, but was not introduced to Buddhist meditation practices until 2007, when she signed up for a 10-‐day retreat, not realizing what type of meditation it was! The potential for freedom that Buddhist practice holds became almost immediately apparent to her.
In 2010, Victor Byrd encouraged her to do extended silent retreat practice. Since then, she has done four long silent retreats, the longest of which was 11 months. In the course of this practice, she has had the good fortune to study with many remarkable teachers, including Ajahn Succito, Sayadaw Vivekanada, Rodney Smith, Joseph Goldstein, Marcia Rose - and quite a few others - to all of whom she is profoundly grateful.
Jane completed Insight LA’s first Facilitator Training led by Trudy Goodman and other teachers and taught at Insight LA’s Los Feliz location for several years.Last, but by no means least, she continues to benefit from Dr. Victor Byrd’s wisdom and encouragement.
