Developed to demonstrate the complete process of meditative inquiry, the Meditation Diamond supports the development of real depth and thorough engagement in spiritual practice. 

The path of awakening is not intrinsically dependent on any particular method, teaching, or system of study. Awakening to the true nature of self can occur spontaneously and may also manifest through many years of practice. Our rich traditions of meditation offer proven approaches to realization and awakening that have borne fruit for many thousands of people over the centuries. The Meditation Diamond is a contemporary vehicle through which we can distill the results of our efforts. Through the Meditation Diamond we come to understand the ground of our common life which supports the evolution of each person’s true potential. 


The Meditation Diamond is based on 5 distinct areas of focus:

  1. Beginner’s Mind

  2. Method and Concentration

  3. Breakthroughs and Breakdowns

  4. Refinement and Integration

  5. Becoming Ordinary

Beginner’s Mind - An essential component for approaching the realization of the non-dual reality that underpins our momentary experience. Forget everything you know.

Method and Concentration - Through skilled and careful use of methods and approaches we find a way through the barriers of conceptual self. You are not who you think you are.

Breakthroughs and breakdowns - Peak experiences, realizations large and small, loss of ego, and authentic awakening. Enlightenment is endless. 

Refinement and Integration - Going deeper, resolving existential questions, flexibility and mature practice on and off the meditation cushion. There is always further to go.

Becoming Ordinary - Dissolving spiritual materialism, free functioning and freedom actualized. Returning home.

This course will offer insights and experience resulting from our Guiding Teacher’s 20 years of earnest spiritual inquiry. It serves as a primer for the serious meditation practitioner wishing to deepen their practice. This 5-week course is particularly recommended for LBM sustaining members and is offered at a substantial discount.

This course is being offered for only $130 to sustaining members (those who maintain a monthly donation of $40 or more) and to non-sustaining members for $225.

This five-week course meets 5 consecutive Saturdays, 10am - 12:30pm

We meet in the Gabrielson Chapel of the Bay Shore Church on The Toledo and Granada in Belmont Shore.

Parking: There is a free lot across Granada Ave. with public parking available. Street parking is also available.

Equipment: We have different styles of zafus (firm sitting cushions), zabutons (floor mats), benches and comfortable chairs on hand.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothes and shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

  • An extra wrap like a blanket or shawl to keep warm during the sits.

Jokai Blackwell Sensei

Jokai Blackwell Sensei relocated to Southern California from the UK in 2000 to study with Charles Tenshin Fletcher Roshi at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center. After completing formal study, encompassing over a decade of residential training and service, he received Dharma Transmission (full authorization to teach) in the White Plum Lineage of Zen Buddhism. Jokai emphasizes the direct experience of awakening using contemporary language and time-honored methods.
