Exploring the Heart-Mind
Working Meditatively with Mind States, Awareness, and Conceptions of the Self, with Susy Keely
This series of explorations builds upon the basic meditation skills of being mindful and attentive to our experience (including body sensations, thoughts, feelings, and emotion).
We will begin to examine the interplay of these various strands of our experience, and how they manifest in states of mind, attitudes, and self-conception. The emphasis will be on meditative approaches that can help to encourage more understanding and freedom in how we affect and relate to our moods, habitual tendencies, and self-sense. The topics of exploration will include:
- States of Mind, Moods, and Mental Formations
- Different qualities and capacities of awareness and how to play with them in meditation.
- Exploring conceptions of the self (including the Five Aggregates, the Buddha’s classification of the ways we experience our self-sense).
- Using different meditative “ways of looking” at the aspects of our experience in order to gain insight and freedom from suffering.
Explorations will involve the introduction and discussion of Buddhist teachings and ideas, relevant guided meditations, and time for sharing our experience and practice with each other. The primary thrust of these explorations will be on ways to use these teachings to inform and develop our meditation practice. Therefore practical application will be prioritized (in the direction of encouraging greater freedom, joy, and compassion in our lives).
Suggested Prerequisite: Prior experience is helpful as this course does NOT offer introductory meditation instruction. It will be helpful if you have previously attended a Beginners Course, Half-Day Retreat or other introductory meditation session.
Recommended Reading: Not required, but we will draw upon the books “Seeing that Frees: Meditations on Emptiness and Dependent Arising” by Rob Burbea and “Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization” by Analayo.
This four-week course meets 4 Thursdays, 7:00pm-8:30pm.

The course fee is $100
Refunds are available up to a week before the course. After that time a $5 service fee will be incurred plus the cost of any classes attended.

Important Note: There is no wheelchair access to the main meditation hall upstairs. An alternate sitting space may be made available upon request.
Class Preparation: We have cushions, zafus, benches and comfortable chairs on hand, but you are welcome to bring your own sitting gear.
